This source's title shares a difficulty with some other Facts On File books. Online catalogs use A as a stop word, so the book will not show up on a title search in an online catalog even if a library owns it. The second problem with the title is the use of STS, which stands for the interdisciplinary field of Science, Technology, and Society (covered in the Facts On File Encyclopedia of Science, Technology, and Society [1999]) but is not an acronym that will be familiar to all readers.

Those difficulties aside, this is a useful reference source. In text written at a level appropriate for high-school students or undergraduates, it chronicles 208 men and women scientists and inventors, both recent and historical, whose scientific or technological achievements have had a major impact on society. Entries are about 1,000 words each and list nationalities, dates, and discipline and describe the experiences and contribution of the featured scientists and inventors. Some, but not all, entries contain photographs or portraits of the notable person. Cross-references are indicated in small capitals. Entries do not have bibliographies for further reading.

Some of the biographies are for well-known people (Rachel Carson, Charles Darwin, Joseph Lister, J. Robert Oppenheimer); others are for less-well-known individuals. Reflecting the multidisciplinary nature of the STS field, coverage is diverse, extending to explorers Ferdinand Magellan and Marco Polo and pottery manufacturer Josiah Spode. Controversies, such as that between Steven Jobs and John Sculley at Apple Computer, or Rosalind Franklin and the discovery of DNA, are presented with balance. Some of the choices seem unusual. For instance, Paul Allen, cofounder of Microsoft, is covered, but Bill Gates, the other cofounder, is not. The writing is clear and nontechnical and includes personal experiences. Appendixes include a chronology and lists of entries by year of birth, country of birth, country of major scientific activity, and field of study. This title will be a useful addition to science biographical collections of both smaller and larger high-school, academic, and public libraries. RBBCopyright © American Library Association.
